Description

A dataset contains 3123 unique occurrences of 86 testate amoebae species (species, genera, and families) from Sphagnum bogs of forest-steppe ecotone (the Middle Volga territory, Russia) with data on microtopography (hummocks, lawns, hollows or not available), oxidizing and reducing potential (redox), total mineralization (TDS), substrate temperature, acidity (Ph), substrate moisture and water table depth (WTD). It is based on field studies performed by Mazei Yuri, Tsyganov Andrei, Bubnova Olga, and Chernyshov Viktor from 2004 to 2006. The dataset contains occurrences and geographic coordinates of terrestrial testate amoebae species occurring in Sphagnum bogs with botanical descriptions of nine represented mires. All samples were prepared using the washing method and water suspension concentration. All data has been published in the related publications Mazei and Tsyganov, 2007a; Mazei et al., 2007a; Mazei et al., 2007b; Mazei and Bubnova, 2007a; Mazei and Tsyganov, 2007b; Tsyganov and Mazei, 2007; Mazei and Bubnova, 2008; Mazei and Bubnova, 2009; Mazei et al., 2009; Mazei and Bubnova, 2007b; Mazei et al., 2007b (See reference list).

Data Records

The data in this occurrence resource has been published as a Darwin Core Archive (DwC-A), which is a standardized format for sharing biodiversity data as a set of one or more data tables. The core data table contains 3,123 records.

1 extension data tables also exist. An extension record supplies extra information about a core record. The number of records in each extension data table is illustrated below.

Sampling Methods

The material was collected from 109 moisture gradients, vegetation composition, and microtopography sampling points.

Study Extent Fieldworks were held from 2004 of May to 2006 of July in bogs of forest-steppe ecotone (Penza region, Middle Volga Territory, Russia).

Method step description:

  1. All samples represented Sphagnum moss plants prepared using the following procedure. Samples were thoroughly shaken and stirred for 10 min in some distilled water to extract testate amoebae.
  2. The suspension without sphagnum stems was poured off a Petri dish; live amoebae and empty tests were identified and counted separately in one-tenth of the field of vision of the entire Petri dish using a stereomicroscope at X65 magnification. If necessary, the shells were transferred with the help of a thin pipette to slide, placed in a drop of glycerol, and investigated at a magnification of x150 or x300 using a light microscope.
  3. There were counted no less than 300 shells in each sample. The taxonomic classification at the genus level is based on the revisions of Kosakyan et al. (2016) as summarized in Tsyganov et al. (2016), González-Miguéns et al. (2021) and González-Miguéns et al. (2022).
