Description

This dataset presents the distribution of freshwater and brackish diatoms in streams and waterbodies (permanent and temporary) of Utrish Nature State Reserve, Abrau Peninsula (Russia).

Data Records

The data in this occurrence resource has been published as a Darwin Core Archive (DwC-A), which is a standardized format for sharing biodiversity data as a set of one or more data tables. The core data table contains 215 records.

This IPT archives the data and thus serves as the data repository. The data and resource metadata are available for download in the downloads section. The versions table lists other versions of the resource that have been made publicly available and allows tracking changes made to the resource over time.

Project Data

This dataset presents the distribution of freshwater and brackish diatoms in streams and waterbodies (permanent and temporary) of Utrish Nature State Reserve, Abrau Peninsula (Russia).

Title Diatoms of Utrish State Nature Reserve, Abrau Peninsula (Russia)
Funding This work was supported by the Russian Science Foundation, project #19-74-10104. The study was conducted using Joint Usage Center «Instrumental methods in ecology» at the IEE RAS.
Study Area Description Abrau Peninsula located between the city of Anapa and Abrau- Durso settlement in Novorossiysk district, Krasnodar Krai, Russia. Most of the Abrau Peninsula is under the protection of the Utrish State Nature Reserve and is not affected or disturbed by human activity, with the exception of the coastal zone and suburbs. The Abrau Peninsula has a humid subtropical (Cfa) and Mediterranean climate (Csa) according to Köppen climate classification with cool rainy winters without a stable snow cover and with hot dry summers. Freshwater habitats are represented by permanent and temporary streams flowing to the Black Sea, as well as temporary small waterbodies (referred as "puddles") scattered across the Abrau Peninsula. Brackish habitats are represented by small permanent lagoons located along coastline.

Sampling Methods

Diatoms were samples and prepared following the European and National recommendations. Material was cleaned from the organics according to hot peroxide method following Kelly et al. (2001).

Study Extent Freshwater and brackish diatoms (Bacillariophyta Karsten 1928) from 67 sites (SamplingLocationID: 1-67) from 39 permanent streams, 21 temporary waterbodies (puddles) and 7 permanent waterbodies of Utrish Nature State Reserve.
Quality Control For diatom identification at the lowest taxonomic level possible we used different European and Russian floras, including monographs in the series “Diatoms of Europe”, “Bibliotheca Diatomologica” (Cantonati et al. 2017, Kulikovskiy et al. 2016, Lange-Bertalot 2001). Proper diatom taxon names were verified according to Guiry and Guiry (2022).

Method step description:

  1. The data has been published as a Darwin Core Archive (DwC-A), which is a standardized format for sharing biodiversity data as a set of one or more data tables. The core data table contains 215 occurrences for 88 taxa from 67 sampling sites with notes on sampling type (SampleRemarks).
