Description

This occurrence dataset provides primary data on repeated tree measurement of two inventories on the permanent sampling plot (8.8 ha) established in the old-growth polydominant broadleaved forest stand in the “Kaluzhskie Zaseki” State Nature Reserve (center of the European part of Russian Federation). The time span between the inventories was 30 years, and a total of more than 11 000 stems were included in the study (11 tree species and 3 genera). During the measurements, the tree species (for some trees only genus was determined), stem diameter at breast height of 1.3 m (DBH), and life status were recorded for every individual stem, and some additional attributes were determined for some trees. Field data were digitized and compiled into the PostgreSQL database. Deep data cleaning and validation (with documentation of changes) has been performed before data standardization according to the Darwin Core standard.

Geographic Coverage

The Kaluzhskie Zaseki State Nature Reserve is located in the northwest of the Central Russian Upland, in the southeast of the Kaluga region, in the territory adjacent to the Orel and Tula regions.

Bounding Coordinates South West [53.621, 35.867], North East [53.626, 35.87]

Taxonomic Coverage

In total, 11 tree species of 10 genera were identified, and, additionally, 3 taxons were identified only at genus level. Scientific names were given according to the GBIF Backbone taxonomy, vernacular names - according to Mayevsky (2014).

Genus Betula L. (Береза (RU)), Salix L. (Ива (RU)), Malus Mill.

Sampling Methods

During the inventory (1986) all woody stems (alive and dead) with the diameter at breast height (DBH) >5 cm were identified, measured, mapped and marked within the plot. The local Cartesian coordinates were recorded for every individual stem. Under the re-inventory of 2016–18 led by Prof. Maxim V. Bobrovsky the DBH and life status (alive or dead) for each stem were measured. All new trees (alive and dead) with DBH >5 cm were marked and measured. An approximate location of new trees was marked on the tree location scheme of 1986–88 (without using instrumental measurements). Corylus avellana individuals were not counted in the re-inventory.

Study Extent The permanent sampling plot with total area of 8.8 ha (440 ✕ 200 m) was established by the team of researchers and students led by Prof. Olga V. Smirnova in 1986 in the southern part of the Reserve. The tree stand consisted of Quercus robur, Fraxinus excelsior, Tilia cordata, Acer platanoides, Acer campestre, Ulmus glabra, as well as Betula spp. and Populus tremula. The age of the tree stand was 150–400 years.
Quality Control The data of the inventory were digitised into the local database and stored in a DBF format. Re-inventory data were digitised into spreadsheets, and after this all data were imported into PostgreSQL database. According to the main principles of data quality (Chapman, 2005) we checked semantic and structural consistency, as well as completeness of data. After defining errors and issues, all error instances and error types were documented, and checked in the field. In total 554 issues were resolved and all changes were documented in the database. All original (verbatim) values were maintained and not lost in the data cleaning process. Coordinates of trees were blurred and the accuracy of location was 30 m.
